In my job, I have the opportunity to meet new people each and every day. Some I know for just a short time, others become a part of my circle. Legend Homes and the amazing people that make up this company are definitely in the latter category. In addition to being incredibly talented and dedicated and responsible home builders, they are all – to a one! – unbelievably big hearted. Go ahead, scroll around on their website. Trust me when I tell you, it’s not every day that a luxury home builder gives back to the communities where they develop properties. But the folks at Legend understand how fortunate enough they are to work in Williamson County and last weekend, they helped build a community in which they’re, well, building. On Saturday, over twenty members of the Legend family (including yours truly) put on their construction togs, grabbed their shovels (and tools!) and built raised bed in the Bit of Earth Community Garden in Franklin’s Everbright neighborhood. Legend has built several homes in the Everbright neighborhood and have become such a part of this special community that they wanted to find a real, tangible way to give back to the residents. And since Legend is in the business of building and growing, what better way to help this community grow than by building structures to help their garden grow!
This community garden actually started about two years ago as a non-profit, community outreach program. When Legend began building in Everbright, they realized what a truly special place it was and is. Residents, both low-income renters and luxury home buyers, are invested in the success of this quaint neighborhood, located blocks from downtown Franklin. The neighborhood has a down to earth, close-knit vibe and they understand that working together yields great dividends. Many of the beds at the Everbright garden are rented by low-income residents, but others are cultivated by new homeowners who have the honor of living in a Legend Home. All garden members have the opportunity to grow their own food, co-op with others, or sell the produce at local markets. So, Saturday. We got dirty and we had fun and we gave back to this community that has given us so much. On this gray and windy day, we built twenty raised beds that will soon be flourishing with organic fruits and veggies! While building is nothing new for the Legend crew, building something that yields such positive and immediate results was a real pleasure. And I was reminded of just how fortunate I am to get to work with such civic-minded and kind – incredibly kind – men and women who know how important it is to give back to the communities that give them (and me!) so much!
