Living in the South, Swimming pools are a popular home feature, especially during the pandemic, and LCT Team – Parks home experts share must have swimming pool design elements.
Swimming Pool Design Elements – Our Favorites
How Deep?
When building a pool, definitely take into consideration how you are going to use it from swimming laps to water sports. For Megan, she knew she wanted to get the most use out of her pool and didn’t want people to congregate only in the shallow end.
“We made our deepest section six feet so everyone could spread out and enjoy it. Adults and my three kids can still jump in because it is deep enough,” Megan said.
Planning for a lot of activities? It is recommended a minimum depth of three feet and a maximum depth of five to six feet.
We are going with three feet in the shallow and five feet in the deep end says Marabeth. “We just want to hang out and cool off. We’re also incorporating an infinity edge, tanning ledge, swim up bar on the end of the pool and a hot tub which I think my son will like the most.”
Tanning Ledge
Tanning ledges are some what new in the past decade for pool design. Typically enjoyed at a nice hotel, residential pools are now incorporating this fun element which Realtor Lisa Culp Taylor says is great option!
Megan also added one to her pool. “I wasn’t going to go without my tanning ledge. I did a 10×10 which is plenty big for two chairs and table which I got at Graham’s Outdoor Living in Cool Springs,” she said.
Realtor Meredith Zeller also loves a tanning ledge but also appreciates a zero entry as well. ”I love a pool that has not only the tanning ledge, but a section with zero entry. It makes a great place for little kids to be able to easily access the pool and play where it is shallow safely,” says the mother of two.
Water Features
The sound of flowing water and the waves lapping in the ocean is not something we have a lot of in Middle Tennessee which is why we have to make our own! This is one reason why water features are so popular with swimming pools.
“Water spouts or water falls really add a lovely visual and sound element to a pool,” Lisa said. “It’s definitely relaxing.”
Poolside Fire Elements
Mixing a fire element with pool design creates a very interesting setting for a backyard and can extend the hours of your enjoyment.
Marabeth is adding two fire bowls on each side of her pool’s infinity edge. “I love fire and water. I think aesthetically it looks beautiful, sets a good mood and is very relaxing.”
Safety First
We’ve shared all our design must-haves but pool security is a top priority. Be sure the pool is fenced at least four feet high to prevent children from jumping or falling in and has a good latch. Consider a safety cover or alarm which will go off when someone enters the pool as recommended by the American Red Cross.(Click here for more tips.) Be sure if you have children everyone can swim. Finally, be sure and check in with your insurance company for any adjustments to your home owner’s insurance.
