You’ve bought the new house so now what are some of the smart home updates you should make? The LCT Team of real estate experts shares some of their top priorities when moving into a newly built or new to you home.
Smart Home Updates – Security, Home Automation
The LCT Team – Parks works with a lot of folks moving to the area with some home closings taking place virtually before relocation. Realtor Meredith Zeller says one of the first smart home updates to make is installing a security system.
“Whether it’s a Ring doorbell or camera system you can access remotely, it is a smart idea to be able to interact with people at your door and be able to check out the premises of your home,” Meredith said.
Get started on the right foot with your new home by also having your home automation systems installed prior to or as soon as you move in.
“WiFi controlled irrigation and any whole home automation from audio to HVAC is also great to have installed right away,” Meredith said.
Realtor Lisa Culp Taylor agrees. “Yes, hang those TVs but also convert your light switches to Alexa compatible systems. And, don’t forget the dimmers, definitely a game-changer. I also like to have a Sonos music system operational in early days too. It can save you headaches in the long-run,” Lisa said.
Updates Before The Home Move
In addition to making any painting updates, definitely consider replacing or cleaning carpet and refinishing your floors.
“I’m contemplating refinishing my floors now and it will be such a headache. You should definitely evaluate your new home’s floors and update if necessary before moving in. You’ll be happy you did so,” Meredith said. Her big pro tip is don’t choose a dark stain like Jacobean which shows everything!”
Lighter floors like this pretty Legend Homes are better for every day living says Realtor Meredith Zeller.
New rugs and furniture also become a priority and Realtor Molly Burns suggests making decisions on big pieces as quickly as possible due to the supply chain delays. “Definitely start looking early and you can also check out Facebook Market Place for great options. I found a cute outdoor couch on it. I also like to go ahead and install a Pura Smart Home Fragrance Diffuser. Frasier Fir is my winter favorite and I love a soft linen for spring.”
After you contemplate your floors, window treatments should also be a priority says Realtor Amy Pappas.
“If you have kids, you don’t want them waking up at the crack of dawn, and, of course, you’ll want the privacy,” she said. Custom window treatments are always a great option and check out Hunter Douglas for a variety of products, styles and materials from automated to room darkening shades and many with extended warranties.
Amy also recommends a second purge of items once you move in too. “You definitely make a lot of choices as you are packing. Now that you are moving in, it is so smart to have round two of purging and donating.”
Window treatments are always a top priority and working with a designer on custom options is always great like this beautiful home. (Previous LCT Team – Parks Listing.)
Outdoor Living
As you begin your plans for your outdoor spaces, if moving into new construction, evaluate your backyard says Lisa.
“With a lot of new construction, there is a front yard landscape package so you’ll need to give your backyard attention so it will have time to grow,” Lisa said. Check out this twelve-month yard and garden check list from Southern Living to inspire your efforts.
